Student Services

Orientation

Moving to a new city can be intimidating. At CIBS College, every effort is made to make new students feel at home in their new surroundings. We take it upon ourselves to familiarize newcomers with their new neighborhood¡¯s bus-routes, shopping locations and other such necessary amenities

Counseling

CIBS College offers independent counseling to each student¡¯s program selection, and any personal matters as necessary. Our student¡¯s well being is our first priority, that is; we will make sure that every student's needs are properly met.

Interpretation Service

Our staff and senior students will be pleased to offer assistance to any newly arrived students in their first language. We offer interpretation services in Japanese, Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, Spanish, French, German and Vietnamese to date.

Bank Account

We can help each student to open a bank account in Vancouver by providing information and documentation to the bank on behalf of the student. If the student so desires, we would be pleased to have one of our staff accompany the new students to the bank.

Medical Insurance

All international students must have medical insurance while they are studying in Canada. Private insurance can be purchased upon arrival at CIBS College for about $40 per month. After three months in British Columbia, students will be eligible to purchase insurance from B.C. Medical Services Plan. Students with no medical insurance or invalid coverage will not be permitted to attend class.

Visa  Application

When students register at CIBS College, we can provide assistance in applying for a student visa.

Visa Extension

We can help students apply for a visa extension by providing information and documentation on the status of the student¡¯s scholastic situation and other relevant circumstances.

Information For Parents

At CIBS College, we understand that parents would like to know how their children are doing while they are away from home. For this reason, we are willing to provide parents with information about their child¡¯s grades, attendance, etc. Progress reports can be forwarded to parents. (We do love to be proud of our children, don¡¯t we?) Concurrently, if a student is having problems or has disobeyed school policy we will notify the student¡¯s parents. The rights of any student whom is a consenting adult must obviously be respected under the Canadian Constitution.

Student Activities

Vancouver is renowned for its outdoor activities. We encourage our students to participate in the wide variety of physical recreation available in and around the city.

The Student Services Coordinator organizes social events and extra-curricular activities year round. Outings such as snow shoeing, skiing, hiking, horseback riding, skating, badminton, golf and tennis, as well as visits to tourist attractions and restaurants around Vancouver are pre-arranged for students.

To provide opportunities for students to meet each other and form friendships, we offer regular parties, dances and cultural days. Each semester formal graduation dinner ceremonies are held for the graduating senior classes.

Resources And  Facilities

1/Recreational Facilities

CIBS College has negotiated special rates for students at a local fitness center. Public tennis courts, recreation centers and playing fields are conveniently located nearby.

2/Resource Centre/Library

The College carries a wide variety of published materials including a reference section, periodicals, government publications, and university and college calendars from all over North America.

3/Computer Labs

We have the latest equipment in our computer labs. Students can access the World Wide Web from the labs or from the computers in the library. Students also have access to a variety of computer software.

Student Association

All students automatically become members of CIBS College¡¯s Student Association. The role of the Student Association is to help the Student Services Coordinator organize social events and extra-curricular activities, and to provide new students with any extra support they may need in order to make the most of their experience in Canada.

Student Employment

Each semester, CIBS College teachers will select outstanding students for the Teaching Assistant Program. A Senior Teaching Assistant will be chosen from each level (except for DC100) to coordinate Junior Teaching Assistants, as well as to assist students directly.

The responsibility of this program is to provide CIBS students with immediate assistance in the following areas: translation, homework, make-up assignments following an absence, examination preparation, study skills and orientation to CIBS College life and policies.

Class Representatives will be elected from each class to serve on the CIBS College Student Association.

Home Stay

¡°Home stay¡± is an opportunity for students to live with host families in order to increase both their awareness of Canadian culture and, to accelerate the development of their English language skills. Families have been chosen because they are committed to involvement in activities with the student, interested in intercultural communication, and are fluent in English. Each student will have the opportunity to stay in a Canadian home, have his/her own bedroom and study area, have three meals a day, and learn about Canadian culture and lifestyle through interaction with a Canadian family.

The College provides orientation and ongoing counseling throughout the ¡°Home stay¡± period, and a ¡°Home stay¡± Coordinator is always available to the students to help them deal with any problems that they might encounter in their new home.

Students who are interested in living with a ¡°Home stay¡± family should inform us at least two weeks in advance. ¡°Home stay¡± costs $735 Canadian Dollar/month. There is also a one-time ¡°Home stay¡± placement fee of $195 Canadian Dollar.

Airport Pick-Up

If requested, CIBS College will arrange an airport pick-up service for students living with a ¡°Home stay¡± family. The fee for this service is $65 Canadian Dollar. Flight information must be forwarded to us at least two weeks in advance.
